Locate brace section 2 rehearsal

Clip from rehearsal for Locate brace section II 2005. In this piece we worked with 35 people to create one mass without any negative space. The performers were not all dancers and it was a joy to go through the process with them as they discovered how other bodies and shapes could fit into their own if they left themselves open in certain ways. We asked them to create a mass and then shift closer to create yet smaller tighter mass. When performed, they were all dressed in white and cream and the lighting was so dim that individual bodies were indiscernible at the moment they overlapped in the space. It read like a solo.

Locate brace Section 1

Clip from Locate brace section I 2005. Performed by Naomi Chamblin, Audrey Ellis, and Erin Reid. This piece had three structures built of salvaged wood and layers of white lace and silk. A bare woman, covered in white powder, stood within each structure. Structures were lit for two minutes, exposing the women in a bound still posture; and rotated in darkness to a new facing, changing the perspective of the scultpture, body, and posture. Structures were seen anterior, profile right, posterior, profile left. White lights were at full intensity, creating an austere and brutal wash over the structures. With no sound score, this sculptural installation had contrasts of harsh and soft, and clynical versus formal display.

Locate brace Study 1 & 2

This is a clip of a study we did while creating Locate brace 2005. In this study we were curious about two spatially-fixed bodies executing bound movements for and extended duration. Overlapping skin, hair and white fabric describe the landscape but the place is unspecified and indistinct.

Locate brace Section 3

Locate brace section III 2005. Danced by Alexis Iammario, Lindsay Stegeman, Naomi Chamblin, and Erin Reid. This is the dance section to an evening length event created by Alexis and Lindsay. In this piece we worked with pairs: one and one and two and two. Throughout the process of creating this piece we investigated Authorship. To what degree could we separate the author/generator of highly nuanced movement from its final stylized form in performance. We created phrase work respectively, which we gave over to one another to set on the other two dancers. In the process of teaching the material to new bodies it was re-created/stylized but maintained the original structure. By blending the ownership of the material between eachother and the dancers as new bodies, we found new and more dynamic choreography.

Locate brace rehearsal

Clip from rehearsal for Locate brace 2005. Also in this clip, are dancers Naomi Chamblin and Erin Reid. This shows the process of piecing together the movement vocabulary and mapping of spatial patterns.
